The duties for this Full-Time include but are not limited to the following:
- Shall assist the U.S. Coast Guard safety with the fitness for duty evaluations of Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) applicants.
- Evaluates the medical and physical suitability of applicants for Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC). Determines if physical and medical impairments may affect an applicant's abilities to effectively and safely perform the duties of the MMC for which they have applied. Interprets results of medical examinations and evaluations, including medical specialty consultations and test.
- Shall conduct an evaluation based on information gained from the CG-719K or CG-719K/E and, supplemental submitted documents if an issue arises or there is a concern with regard to maritime safety.
- Shall review reports of medical examinations and supporting legal and privacy documents submitted as part of an application for Coast Guard (CG) merchant mariner credentials (MMC) and provide assessments for, determining whether regulations of statues apply, or if a waiver is required based on a very large number of combinations of medical conditions, medications, biomedical test criteria, demonstrated ability tests, etc.
- Evaluates and determines if additional information is required for complex cases or if conflicts and inconsistencies exist; then establishes the accuracy or validity of statements submitted by the applicant. Contractor personnel compose
, correspondence requesting additional medical data. Contractor personnel recommends whether to restrict the mariner’s credential, develop issuance waivers in cases of certain functional defects, or deny the MMC.
- Shall be proficient in computers.
- The Merchant Mariner Licensing and Documentation (MMLD) system, a computer-based network. The MMLD is a state-of-the art computer approach for MMC application processing and analysis by evaluators.
- Process and procedural changes are common and so the ability to remain flexible and adaptable is a critical element for success at the National Maritime Center.

- Diploma from an accredited Physician Assistant program (At least a Bachelor’s Degree).
- Graduation from a Physician Assistant training program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) and the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- A current unrestricted license to practice as a Physician Assistant in one of the fifty states.
- A minimum of 1 year of recent experience.
- “No adverse information on file” rating with the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB).
